Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program evaluation

The Tobacco Free team is undertaking an impact and outcome evaluation of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program. The TIS program aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by reducing the prevalence of tobacco use and vaping through population health promotion activities.

The TIS program is managed and funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care’s Preventive Health and Communicable Disease Section (First Nations Health). More information on the TIS program can be found on the TIS website

The Which Way? Study

Which Way? is an Indigenous-led research project from the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute found that resources and funding is urgently needed to improve culturally safe and effective support for pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are trying to quit smoking. University of Newcastle Michelle Kennedy led the three-year study to find culturally effective quitting methods.

Mayi Kuwayu study

The Mayi Kuwayu Study the largest national study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, health and wellbeing. It also explores attitudes and behaviours that are related to tobacco use. The Mayi Kuwayu Study was created by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and looks at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing is linked to our cultures. Working with existing data sources

The Tobacco Free team examines a diverse range of data sources to better understand trends in, and factors that effect smoking uptake and cessation among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The research team has analysed data from the Mayi Kuwayu Study, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS), Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), National Perinatal Data Collection (NPDC), national Key Performance Indicators (nKPI) and others.
